| Crossing the "boardwalk" Olivia (Calhoun County) Texas, 1908 |
I am tentatively
identifying the children in this picture as the children of Emil and Ellen
Peterson (left to right: Gustaf Emil, Oscar Alvin, and Ethel Christina).
As for the gentleman so ably assisting Miss Ethel, I believe that may be her
grandfather (the father of her mother), Malcolm Cavallin. But truthfully - I'm
just not sure.
Miss Ethel's future has been told in an earlier post. Here are the "futures" of her brothers:
Gustaf Emil Peterson (1902 to 1956) will grow up and marry Miss Mary Ellen Slaughter. They will farm in the nearby Jackson County, Texas. On his death, he will be buried back home in the Olivia Texas Cemetery, close to the rest of his family

Oscar Alvin Peterson,
will later use the name “Alvin” more frequently than his first name. A
lucky man, he will marry Miss Ola Mae Huddleston on July 28, 1928. (She
will become known for her delicious cooking of dewberry cobbler and fried
peach pies, celebrate her 100th birthday in 2011 and be presented
the key to the city of Port Lavaca.) They will stay and farm in the Olivia
area of Calhoun County, Texas.
Of Malcolm Ludvig Cavallin,
the Swedes in Texas book notes that he was born in 1847 in Östergötland
(Sweden) and immigrated in 1869, going first to Michigan. In 1871, he
married Kristina Beata Larson who had come to America with her family from
Västergötland (Sweden). The family lived first in Kansas, but in 1892 they came
to Olivia, Texas where they settled in and lived the rest of their lives.
Kristina gBy the time the Swedes in Texas book was published in 1918, Malcolm
Cavallin was prosperous, owning "480 acres, ... located on the eastern
shore of the island [sic] by the beautiful Carancahua Bay with a
view over Palacios across the sound."
