A Visit to the bachelors 2: Men and Dogs

2 Men, 2 Dogs. Olivia Area, Calhoun County Texas, Circa 1910
I’m thinking that this picture is of the same two gentleman shown in the previous post. We can see them just a bit more clearly in this picture – despite its obvious defects of dirt and scratches. Here, in the better light of the outdoors, they are at least motionless. Just guessing – I’d say these might be two of the Peterson brothers, with the one on the left being Otto Peterson, the man that our Mabel Magnolia Cavallin would marry in 1913, and the gentleman on the right being Anders Lenus, Otto’s younger brother.
Three Peterson brothers immigrated from Norra Härened in Västergötland, Sweden. The eldest, Carl “Charley” Emil, was one of the earliest Swedish settlers in the Olivia area, arriving from the iron mines of Michigan in 1893. In 1902 he married Ellen Cavallin (our Mabel’s oldest sister.) The second brother to arrive was Anders Lenus Peterson who came to Olivia in 1903/1904. He was a bit restless and left Olivia and went north for several years, returning to stay in 1909. He married the school teacher, Edith Seamans in 1916. The last brother to come was Otto, arriving in 1906, he worked first as a farm hand for one of his brothers and then bought his own farm and married Mabel Cavallin in 1913. The Peterson and Cavallin families put down deep roots in the Olivia area. To this day, many of them still live in Calhoun county, and many more come back to visit during the annual reunion.
Now writing the above, makes me question my date for this picture and the last post (which I originally tagged as circa 1907). If these are the Peterson brothers, Lenus and Otto, that suggests that the date would be more likely 1909 or after. This is the problem with “posting while researching”. One’s conclusions are never quite concluded.
By the way, I also want to point out that fine pair of dogs in this picture. (Breed unknown, Does anyone have any suggestions on breed beyond “classic mutt”?)
