Working with a cow and calf. 

This is part of the earlier series "Work on the Farm". The action takes place in Olivia Colony, Calhoun County, Texas, circa 1900. These two gentleman are tentatively identified as Paul Paulson and his oldest son, John Paulson. We saw them  before in the series of pictures / posts of the family heading out to hoe cotton. I've put links to those posts at the bottom of this one.

I'm not quite sure what is going on in this picture and suggestions are welcome. Is that a common way to tie / control a cow?
