Work On The Farm 6: Plowing the Field, circa 1900

Plowing. Calhoun County, Texas, circa 1900.

This photo was taken sometime between 1893 and 1912.   I believe it was taken near Olivia in Calhoun County, Texas at about the same time as the other farming photos.

In this case, our farmer is using a walking 2 row cultivator. John Deere patented a walking cultivator in 1867. Our farmer is plowing with a team of two horses and is getting a little extra "help" from the colt. It was not uncommon to allow a colt to run free while plowing with its mother.
