Feeding The Chickens, Olivia, Calhoun County, Texas, circa 1900

Man Feeding Chickens, Calhoun County, Texas, circa 1910
Like the rest of the pictures in the present set, this picture was likely taken sometime between 1894 and 1910, probably closer to the 1910 date.  I find it interesting how closely the clothes worn by this gentleman resemble those of the man in the picture in  "Water from the Well".  Perhaps these are just the common work clothes worn by the Swedish Americans in Texas at this time.  It might also be the same man, though the hat is different, and speaking of hats - note the Very different man's hat on the porch rail.

I always find the additional objects in these pictures interesting.  Is that a sheep skin hanging next to the hat?  Then there is the old shoe next to the galvanized metal tub under the porch, the small step stool on the left, the discarded can in the foreground. What is the object on left? - It looks like a stick with a circular piece of metal attached to it.  Is the chicken wire on the porch of the building designed to keep chickens in or out?
