Plant and Pants. Turn of the Century, Calhoun County, Texas

Yard with acacia bush and hanging clothes. Texas.

There is just something regrettable about a picture of a flowering bush in black and white. In this case, the large rather nondescript bush in the foreground dominates the photo. It is probably an Acacia. Native to the region, the Acacia was, and is, also used as an ornamental plant. This one appears to have slightly outgrown the garden edging it was planted within.

Looking past the bush, we again see the extensive guttering that suggests a cistern or water tank just beyond (or below) the edge of our picture; the hanging just-washed clothes; and some very interesting wooden construction along the ground in the background.  Like most other houses in these Olivia pictures, the house is board and batten.

This photograph was possibly taken about the same time as the pictures already posted of people washing clothes.  (Washing clothes,  Wooden Water Tank) Here we see the result of their hard work.

I imagine our photographer, having rung the water out of the last piece of clothing, giving each item a final “snap” to snap out the wrinkles as they are hung on the line. Then drying his/her hands and going to get the camera to take this picture, not of the common clothes but of the “beautiful” bush.

The Paulsons often printed their photographs on to postcard paper and would send the pictures as a postcard. “Mother” he/she might write. “Remember the bush you planted? Just look how its grown. If only you could see the color – those white (yellow?) blooms are just so pretty. And the sky was just a beautiful blue.”
